Description
The theme of the ‘door‘ has always had a wide-ranging and meaningful symbolism, in the spiritual traditions of both East and West. In the various cultures, the act of crossing a threshold indicates a reunion with a new world, and the door is a symbol of separation or communication between two spheres, not only as an identification of the physical space that delimits the outside from the inside or vice versa, but also as a passage between two levels: as image of a gap, of a passage, it represents the place from which to start and where to arrive, the threshold of time and the threshold of reality, a point of contact between two opposing forces, a limit between past and future.
Starting from these considerations on the symbolism of the door, I wanted the background of my work to be a photo of Mount Sharp on the planet Mars, which I obtained from the NASA website: the door to Mars represents the discovery of new worlds, a future open to a thousand possibilities, and becomes a symbol of life, with the continuous new experiences that man faces throughout his existence.
In this sense, the door takes on the meaning of the boundary between the dimensions of the known and the unknown. It is an element of identification of life, which is a continuous crossing of thresholds, passing from one phase to another: birth, adolescence, marriage, study, work, but also death, are all moments of human existence, which the individual faces in order to access from one room to another. It is a journey, a succession of new and undiscovered experiences, from the moment of birth and through a series of intermediate transits to the exit that takes place at death, but which can in turn constitute a passage to other worlds, transforming the entire journey made during life into a stage towards aggregation with the world beyond.
